Mathematics Department
- 6th grade mathematics
- Sixth grade math focuses on applying and expanding upon mathematical concepts learned in elementary school mathematics. Students will begin by reviewing and developing their understanding of rational numbers. Students use this understanding to write, interpret, and solve expressions and equations. They also will review, apply, and expand their understanding of fractions, decimals, and percentages to write ratios and rates and use these skills to solve real-life situations (i.e., tax, interests, discounts, etc.) Students will reinforce their understanding of the measures of central tendency (mean, median, and mode) and range and learn how to use, analyze, and predict future outcomes through various types of graphs. Students will also work with two and three-dimensional shapes to calculate perimeter, area, and volume. Finally, students are taught different strategies that can be used to solve word problems or problems that pose unfamiliar situations.
