Junior Ring Ceremony

By: Winnie Chan

“In ancient days of emperors and kings, the ring of an emperor or king was the seal of his word and a symbol of his authority. When the king set not of his subjects on a missing or journey of importance, he often gave him his ring as a sort of passport to other lands, wherever the person wearing this ring traveled, he was given special consideration and often protection because he wore this ring. When people saw the ring, they respected what it stood for. Sometimes the ring was given as a promise of the king’s word. Even thought the king himself was not present, his ring representing that he would keep his word, was all that was necessary.”

“In carrying out this tradition of representation, various schools in this and in other countries over the years have designed what have come to be known as class rings. Each ring is unique to the school it represents, and seniors are unique in that they are student of the school chosen to wear the ring. As the ring represents the school, so do the seniors, as they graduate and become alumnae. Here, you all are recognizable as Cornerstone Academy students; when you graduate and go out into the world, you will probably be recognized as Cornerstone Academy’s alumnae, primarily, or in some cases, only by your ring. The ring is special and different from other schools; it’s not a normal stone, and it’s deep blue color.”

Seven years ago, Cornerstone held their first ring ceremony for the first high school graduating class. Everyone in this class received a ring not only because of the administration’s excitement about Cornerstone’s high school, but also to commemorate the fact that they were the first graduation high school class of Cornerstone Academy.

On December 12, 2006, the graduating class of 2008 received their class ring. The ring ceremony was held immediately after the high school chapel. Mr. C. Wong commenced the ceremony by opening in prayer. Mr. Heafey talked about the significance of the ring and following that was the presentation of the rings. Mrs. C. Brown presented the rings to her homeroom. Following the presentation, Mrs. C. Brown gave closing remarks and Mr. C. Wong ended the ceremony in prayer.
