Do You Have School Spirit?

Winnie Chan, Rita Hom, Traci Mar

Bible Verse of the Month

Commit your works to the Lord, and your thoughts will be established.

~~Proverbs 16:3

Quote of the Month

"You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot help the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by encouraging class hatred. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn. You cannot build character and courage by taking away man's initiative and independence. You cannot help men permanently by doing what they could and should do for themselves."
-- Abraham Lincoln

September 18-22 was Cornerstone Academy’s Spirit week. The high school students were able to display school spirit. Many different themes dominated the week.

Monday’s theme was Twin Day, a day the students dressed as twins or triplets. This resulted in some unique pairs of twins and triplets.

Tuesday’s theme centered on class colors. Freshmen: wore clothes showing yellow; Sophomores: orange; Juniors: red; and Seniors wore green hued clothes.

Wednesday was designated International Day. Students arrived at school attired inclothing representing different countries. Students dressed as the people from China, Vietnam , France, Canada, and Jamaica. An international meal was provided at lunch.

The Senior classmen were the chefs, the menu provided sushi, pizza, noodles, pot stickers, and other items to taste. Thanks Senior class you all did a great job!!!!

Thursday because Super Hero Day. Cornerstone Academy students dressed up as his/her superhero. People colored their hair and some even colored their body. Represented among the superheroes were X- Men, Batman, Superman, and some unique individual heroes. Some student creatively represented the superheroes!! The day was very successful-participants had a blast!

Warm sunshine, sand and the sound of waves beating against the shore. We went to the beach for the last day of Spirit week. Student council members and teachers arrived early to Baker’s beach to set up the day. The student body rode the bus to the beach, and then was separated into 12 teams. There were three games engaged in at the beach, steal the bacon, charades, and sand pictionary.

Steal the bacon is a classic game for beach day and brought out the competitive spirit in all. The only sorrow during the game was the early demise of the stuffed Tweety bird; it seems that although Tweety could escape Sylvester, he couldn’t escape Cornerstone students.

Charades was challenging in that we had to reflect personalities, either Cornerstone faculty or common ones found in every day life. There was an added twist to the game, teams tried to recover a cone and be first to return it to their team without being tackled by the other team

The theme for pictionary was movies. Some of the movies were Cars, Cat Woman, and X men. We found some budding artists during this game.

For lunch there were hotdogs, hamburgers, chips and drinks. Thank you to the cooking crew for cooking for everyone.

When everyone had eaten, everyone was divided back into their teams to discuss beach day and the entire spirit week. Some of sharing questions were “What will you bring back to school from today?” and “What is one goal that you accomplished during spirit week?” When the teams finished sharing, everyone grabbed their belongings and scrambled back down to the beach for the annual group photo. Everything considered, beach day was considered a fun event.

All the High school students did a great job showing there school spirit that week.
